First written reviews of the new Album "Audio-Blender"
Side-Line september 06
Implant has got the constant need to evolve the music;
an Implant fan never knows what the next release will sound like. With their
7th album the Belgian exports shake the blender like they have never done
before. « Was it always this way » starts with a dark laid back
beat and swells to a crescendo with a seductive synth lead. Anne Clark's apocalyptic
lyrics give a cinematic touch to this eclectic opener. The electro clashy
« Don't feed the robots » alludes to Kraftwerk, but with Len Lemeire's
vocals it gets the
powerful implant it deserves. Strangely enough the next song «The creature»
has got the same bassline as the previous track, though thanks to the collaboration
with Front 242's singer Jean Luc de Meyer, I get the feeling the two songs
are put together so subtly that it almost seems like one long composition
that plays like a story. The highlights of the album's first half comes with
the fourth and fifth track. "The Stimulator" consists in all the
best Tiga ingredients, while the repetitive songstructure of "Fading
away" finds its strength in the catchy lyrics "I should have known
before I fucked you, girls like you are rock and roll", my favourite
on this CD. After a smooth intro, which lasts for only a few moments, you
find yourself
plunging into the catacombs of harsh dancefloor industrial with tracks like
"You Push Me" (additional vocals by Erica Dunham from Unter Null)
or "Murdurous Thoughts". I'd never expected a classic wave ballad
like "Your World", but I have to admit the arrangement of piano,
guitar, both Len Lemeire and Anne Clark's vocals, and even a child choir is
a refreshing, wink at Pink Floyd, surprise. Together with the previous song,
"Chanson D'Amour" rows against the stream of electronic restlessness
and flirts with Serge Gainsbourg elements. With its Spanish guitars and goa
flavoured patches, "Spanish Fury" doesn't sound that furious at
all, but "Fuck things up" (vocals by Jennifer Perkin from Ayria)
prepares you for the closing EBM tracks "Focus" and "Communication
Breakdown". There is no accounting for tastes, but without much ado,
this well flavoured cocktail definitely holds some flavours for open music
minds. (VMB:8)VMB.
Writen-magazines reviews of the EP 'Fading Away'
industrial bible august 06
Impossible to categorize
and yet to be duplicated, Implant return this summer with the Fading Away
MCD. This is absolutely brilliant stuff. Waving between trance, IDM, electro,
and experimental, Implant’s uniqueness has been their edge for many
years. The title track has a flat steady beat, breathy vocals, and unique,
tribal breakdowns that are unexpected, yet welcomed. The mix by Zombie Girl
adds in some female vocals, while minimizing most of the musical elements
of the original. Millimetric give it a slight techno meets EBM twist with
their thicker rhythm and denser beat. Featuring Anne Clark on vocals, the
Continental Drift mix of Your World is a wonderfully IDM-ish piece where Anne’s
sporadically placed vocals are pushed to the forefront. The cascading, softer
synths juxtaposed against the dirtier sounding rhythm take this track to another
level. Noisuf-X’s remix of this same piece is a noisier and beat heavier
rendition of the pervious mix with a lot less emphasis on the vocals. The
instrumental piece, No Danger, is an Implant original where they meld a rolling,
techno beat together with a hearty EBM rhythm and atomic testing vocal samples.
They even manage to introduce a tribal like beat every so often without changing
the overall feel of the piece. Cut.Rate.Box’s mix of Murderous Thoughts
is a rough EBM piece with a staticy rhythm and clamorous beats. With its squeakier
synths, robotic vocals, and ebbing beats, Negative Format’s version
has a future-trance™ feel to it. What begins as a slower, instrumental
piece, You Push Me erupts into a noisy EBM assault. A brutal, distorted beat
is coupled with heavily warped vocals on this experimental noise piece. C-Drone
Defect transform this same piece into a lighter, IDM piece with clean vocals,
well placed orchestral elements, and a study beat. Even with only a handful
of original pieces, it’s still easy to hear the unique Implant sound
in each and every track on Fading Away.
Side-Line september 06
Some may be taken aback by the EBM bite of this new
Implant disc. While still conveying their taste for eclecticism and whimsy,
this is certainly the hardest material out of Implant for quite some time.
Additionally, Implant has assembled a rather harsh team of electro remix artists,
with an added bonus of guest vocal appearances from not only the returning
Anne Clark, but from Zombie Girl, Unter Null, and Leæther Strip as well.
A poisoned relationship sets ablaze Len Lemiere's half-spoken seethe in "Fading
Away", a discomforting piece whose muffled thumps bring in an underlying
trance feeling that nearly eclipses a fuzzy dirge of synth. A similar synth
wobbles in arpeggio for the terse "Your World"; a jaded
spoken-word supplied by Anne Clark overlaps its steely snare crack, tense
whistling notes, and a distant sheet metal drum roll. Implant's collaboration
with Erica Dunham of Unter Null called "You Push Me", is a stunning
foray into terror EBM, with her demonic husky growls and turbulent bass and
cacophonous clattering snare driving out its foreboding drone intro. As for
the remixes, Zombie Girl's mix of "Fading Away" succinctly injects
Implant with their creepy motif, with Renée C. Komor's added duet infusing
it with macabre cabaret alongside the plucky hop of drum and bluesy electric
organ riffs. Noisuf-X ensures a gentle piano patter that it can have a place
alongside Clark's cold vocals in their mix of "Your World", but
soon a heavy loping beat and fierce snare intercedes its serenity, giving
it a powerful stomping punch. Finally, Claus Larsen's distinct bass synth
emerges in the Leæther Strip mix of "Was It Always This Way?",
with his own vocals added to deliver backing harmony to Anne's spoken word.
This EP stands testament that Implant are one of the most flexible acts within
their field. Not only do they continue to surprise like a good plot twist,
but they excel in whatever new direction they explore. (VM: 8) Vlad M.
